Printing Colors:
What is Spot Pantone color printing? Why does it matter?
You can think of Spot Pantone color inks as similar to the paint you buy at the local hardware store. Each spot color ink has a unique number associated with it.
When you use spot colors you will know exactly how the colors of your final printed pieces will look. Spot colors are the only way to ensure quality and consistency among different printed pieces, such as business cards, letterhead, envelopes, and pocket folders.
Spot or PMS color printing means that the actual color of the objects in your design (vector art, text, lines, boxes, etc.) are defined using a numeric value (a PMS value). When printed, the ink color is formulated by mixing exact percentages of other ink colors and whites to match the precise color in the swatch book or library.
Designers use the swatch library to choose the PMS numbers to assign to different objects in a design. The most common professional design software packages have the ability to use these swatch libraries or have developed color palettes for spot colors.
The color reproduction you see on your monitor is in the RGB color space. What you see on your monitor IS NOT what you’ll get when printed by any printer. That’s why having both the swatch library on your computer and a hardcopy Pantone swatch book are important. The hardcopy swatch book lets you see exactly what the color will look like when printed, similar to paint chips from the hardware store.
PMS stands for Pantone® Matching System. It is THE international standard for matching and controlling print ink color. It provides standardized color reference chips and formulae to reproduce those colors using standardized basic colors. You can learn more about Pantone® and get a PMS swatch book at www.pantone.com. Order the PMS formula guides coated, uncoated, and matte (they come in a pack of all three). These guides show how the same ink color looks on different types of paper.
What should I do if I need to print photographic images?
You should select Full color, meaning your artwork can utilize any combination of colors, which the printing process achieves by using varying percentages of Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black (CMYK) inks, which is why full color is often called four color process.
Business card slits:
We offer business card slits at no extra charge. You can order slits in the left or right pocket or both pockets, and in a vertical or horizontal orientation. The slits have 4 slashes cut into the paper that will hold your business card in place so that your intended recipient can view and hold your business card from the second they open the folder.
Proof:
PDF soft proof: Free of charge we can provide a PDF proof that you can download or view from within your web browser. PDF files require the Adobe Acrobat Reader, which is free and can be downloaded here. PDF proofs are great for making sure the layout is correct and that all text is correct and typo free. However, PDF proofs cannot be used to ensure that colors will print exactly as you desire. If your job is color critical, we recommend a hardcopy proof (see below).
Hardcopy Epson Proof: If you want to make sure the colors within photographs, type, logos, or design elements will print as you intended, please order a hardcopy Epson proof. An Epson proof is an inkjet proofing method that produces a CMYK (Full or Four Color Process) proof using your files. We produce hardcopy Epson proofs within 48 hours of file submission and ship them via FedEx overnight.
Paper:
Gloss paper makes inks pop off the page, dull (matte) will appear less vivid yet more sophisticated, and uncoated will give a more natural or rough look to your cards. The thickness and rigidity of the paper increases as the number of pts. or weight of the paper increases. If you plan to mail your postcards, uncoated on the address side is the safest option because some mailing houses use ink jet addressing equipment that doesn’t print well on coated paper stocks.
We offer recycled paper options for people and companies concerned about environmental sustainability.
